Supertrawler Geelong Star gives up on Australia: Official Release

Huge win for Australia! Dutch owners of the supertrawler pull stumps and head home. Here's why...

Katwijk, November 22, 2016: The management of Parlevliet & Van der Plas BV, the Dutch pelagic and demersal fisheries company, has decided to stop the fishing activities of the FV Geelong Star in Australia.

"The reason is that we cannot achieve a financial/commercial agreement with the local partners (Seafish Tasmania) in Australia.

"The management regrets that we cannot continue this fishing operation, partly because of the very healthy local pelagic stocks. The fisheries management in Australia is one of the most sustainable in the world.

"We thank the European crew for their tremendous efforts. They made this project possible under difficult conditions, far away from home."

The vessel has now been reflagged from Australia to Dutch flag and is on its way to IJmuiden. The old name of the ship is reinstated: KW 172 Dirk Dirk.

Meantime, and doing no favours to its credibility at all, the Small Pelagic Fishery Industry Association Inc. posted a statement on Facebook saying that:

"The Geelong Star has left Australian waters due to a serious mechanical issue that cannot be rectified locally. Seafish Tasmania Pty Ltd (the largest quota holder in the SPF) reiterates again that they are very happy with the fishing in the SPF and that the fish stocks are extremely healthy and are being managed in a very conservative manner. Seafish is reviewing its position but hopes to be back fishing as soon as possible."

But with the Dutch owners confirming their withdrawal from the small-pelagic fishery in Australia and the departure of this horrid factory freezer ship, we can breathe easy for now.

The Australian fishing communities and the economies that rely on the ocean's baitfish and those creatures that feed on them can resume the happy life as it was before this ship entered our waters 19 months ago. Any more news, we'll let you know.
