Sunreef Yachts signs up F1 champion for electric cat range

Former F1 driver Nico Rosberg jumps from fast cars to slow boats, jumping onboard with Sunreef

Sunreef Yachts has signed up an unusual brand ambassador for its range of electrically powered cruising catamarans – former Formula 1 world driver’s championship winner Nico Rosberg.

Sunreef recently unveiled its new Sunreef 60 Power, the latest addition to its battery-fuelled multihull line-up that includes the 70 Sunreef Power, 80 Sunreef Power and 100 Sunreef Power.

While all of the Power range will feature conventional “hybrid” drivetrains to provide convenient cruising range, the boats will also come with the option of lithium-ion battery-based electric propulsion that uses solar arrays and even wind turbines and kite sails to provide more cruising range.

“It is great to see that the world’s most outstanding manufacturer of luxury catamarans shares my commitment to sustainable technological innovation and I am immensely proud to drive this development forward with Sunreef Yachts,” Rosberg said in a statement announcing the tie-in.

“Luxury and sustainability don’t exclude each other,” he said. “Quite on the contrary. It is through the introduction of green technology and sustainable materials in the luxury sector that we create a halo effect on the entire industry and manage to meet the future demands of even the most sophisticated customers.”

The German-Finnish driver has rebranded himself as a “green tech and mobility entrepreneur and investor” since leaving the F1 paddock after snaring a world driver’s championship behind the wheel of a Mercedes.

Few other details have been released about the electric propulsion system that will drive the Sunreef Power catamaran range, however, the boats will use carbon-fibre to minimise weight without reducing strength.

Sunreef is still working on a special “eco” mode for the battery-powered system that reduces power use, particularly from the airconditioning system, even further.

The Power-branded boats even collect rainwater that can then be used to wash down the boats’ decks.
