Foiling boats are all the rage, but now you should prepare yourself for a new wave of production-built foiling powerboats in the near future. That’s our forecast after production-cat builder Sunreef announced at Cannes Boat Show its plans for a foiling 40-footer with quad outboards and a crazy top speed.
From windsurfers, kiteboards and mighty Moth dinghies to supermaxis contesting the big ocean races, foils are becoming commonplace to create lift, reduce drag and provide greater top speed to sailcraft. Of course, foils are nothing new for those of us who grew up marvelling at the Manly hydrofoils speeding across Sydney Harbour with their hulls riding clear of the water.
But now there’s something in the production-boat pipeline to blow your socks off. According to reports at Gizmag and Boat International, catamaran builder Sunreef is working on a foiling 40-foot dayboat capable of a top cruising speed of 130km/h (70 knots or 80mph) using four outboard engines and a flying cat hull.
The foiling 40 H. is a powercat with a retractable foil system suitable for high-speed cruising when the weather allows. This way you can fly to your anchorage, down the hook and spend more time relaxing. The day-boating layout is designed to assuage the leisure and pleasure seeker with Euro-style sunbeds, an open transom and wide swim ladder.
The 40 H. is reportedly still under development and Sunreef, a French-owned company that manufactures in Poland, plans to release the foiling 40 at the 2015 Cannes Boat Show. Should it all go to plan, we forecast more foiling powerboats in the not-too-distant future.
