Sundance hosts Beneteau Regatta

Big turnout for 10th anniversary of popular Melbourne yachting event

On Saturday March 9, Victorian Beneteau Dealer Sundance Marine hosted their 10th annual Sundance Marine Beneteau Regatta. Sundance welcomed entrants from various clubs around the Bay to the event base at Sandringham Yacht Club.

The fleet, which included entrants from Blairgowrie, Royal Brighton, Royal Geelong, Hobsons Bay, Mornington, Sandringham and Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, showed off a selection of yachts from the the Beneteau range including several race-ready Firsts, race and cruise designed Oceanis and the newly-released Sense 55, one of the first of this new model to arrive into Australia.

After the race briefing, given over a lovely lunch for skippers and crew at the SYC, the fleet assembled at the start for the race for boats in both the spinnaker and non-spinnaker devisions.

The Melbourne weather delivered a perfect 30-degree day and conditions on Port Philip Bay saw flat water and 15 knot winds.

In the Spinnaker Division Denis McConnell skippered his First 45 Schuss to victory. He was closely followed by Alan Woodward and crew aboard their First 45 Reverie and Ashley Trebilock and his First 40 Bandit into third.

In the Non-Spinnaker Division Ross Johnston and crew aboard the stunning new Sense 55 Circe took honours, with Gary Andersons’ Beneteau 47.7 Esprit in second and Paul Commins Oceanis 43 Dionysos in third.

After finishing at Port Melbourne, the fleet cruised up the Yarra River to the Docklands where everyone enjoyed well-earned drinks on the marina, before heading into the Gala Dinner and presentation. With 200 people attending, the evening was a great success with plenty of socialising and a fair amount of colourful post-race analysis.

Sundance Marine Dealer Principal David Beck was delighted with the 10th running of the annual event: "Our Beneteau Regatta is a great opportunity for the Beneteau owners of Victoria to come together for a fun day of competitive racing and then an enjoyable evening sharing their stories. This year we had a great turn out and I was so excited to see the new Sense 55 Circe figure in the results," commented David.
