Steber moves to four-day week for workforce

NSW boat-builder’s response to the coronavirus crisis helps employees spend more time with family

Taree-based boat-builder Steber International has moved its workforce to a four-day week in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak so employees spend more time with their families.

Staff will continue to work a standard 38-hour week. However, the workday will start at 7am and end at 5pm on Mondays to Thursdays, with Fridays handed back as time off.

Steber general manager Alan Steber said the move was aimed at maintaining the wellbeing of both the workers and the company.

“Like all responsible companies we have introduced social distancing and hygiene support for our staff, customers, visitors and suppliers whenever practical,” Steber said.

“We have a number of major defence, commercial and recreational boat builds underway and guarantee to meet delivery commitments for existing and future contracts.”

Steber said the company was also working on “a suite” of research and development projects including an electric hybrid boat and self-driving surveillance vessels.

“Giving our staff more quality time with their families ultimately will help us navigate through these troubled times,” he said.

Steber said most of the company’s boats were made to survey, meaning they had to be built to “critical” standards.

Steber’s latest job was delivering a fisheries research vessel for the Mauritian government. The 18-metre, 35-tonne single-engined fibreglass boat is the largest build that the NSW-based company has ever tacked.

It is the third vessel that Steber has delivered to the Indian Ocean island nation.
