About 9am on Tuesday (June 23), a 20-year-old man boarded a 20-metre Ocean Alexander motorcruiser (72 pilothouse sister ship pictured) that was moored at a marina in Cronulla.
Police will allege that the man started the vessel and steered it away from the marina in a southerly direction in Gunnamatta Bay before he ran aground near Hungry Point.
After freeing the vessel the man travelled out to sea before stopping near Cronulla Beach.
The man allegedly rifled through the boats contents and consumed a quantity of alcohol.
The boat continued to drift throughout the day in a southerly direction towards Jibbon Point.
During the mid-afternoon the owner of the vessel became aware that it had been stolen and informed police.
Officers from the Marine Area Command commenced a search for the vessel.
It was located near Jibbon Point and the officers boarded and arrested the male on board.
The man was conveyed to Sutherland Hospital for a psychiatric assessment but later released into police custody.
He was then conveyed to Sutherland Police Station where he was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent, enter boat without consent and damage property.
The man was refused bail and appeared at Sutherland Local Court yesterday (June 24). Inquiries were continuing.
