Australia’s largest alloy boat maker is on the hunt for more staff as more people look to boating in the wake of international – and even interstate – travel bans imposed under COVID-19 control measures.
A boom in sales to so-called “staycationers” – Australians who traditionally would have spent their money on travel but are now looking much closer to home to enjoy their well-earned time off – has forced Gold Coast-based Telwater to look for more staff to help it cope with the workload.

Telwater builds brands including Stacer, Savage and Quintrex, and makes its own trailers. It was recently bought out by Canadian powered leisure products group BRP, but runs as its own independent operation.
It announced today it was looking for another 10 full-time workers experienced with specialties including welding, general operations, cover fit-out, trailer assembly and forklift driving after the number of production orders after the coronavirus pandemic struck eclipsing the number of orders before it.
“There are not many boat manufacturers that build each model by hand, and that’s what makes the Telwater difference,” Telwater operations manager Brad Drake said.
“Due to the time and consideration we invest into each of our products, we are able to provide our customers with exclusive features such as the aluminum stretch-formed hull.”
Stretch forming is unique to Telwater, and gives the Stacer, Savage and Quintrex boats their unique hulls.
The 10 new employees will join more than 200 workers already at Telwater’s Coomera-based factory. Telwater said some of the factory’s employees had been with the company for up to 27 years – only five years shy of when it was founded.
Stacer, Savage and Quintrex boats are switching to Mercury as the brands’ preferred outboard engine supplier after Telwater’s parent company surprised the market by announcing earlier this year it would quit its 110-year-old Evinrude manufacturing business.
Stacer and Quintrex are currently both offering up to $3800 in included accessories, driving sales for both brands even higher.
Extras in the packages available – depending on the model – range from cutting boards to ski poles, cockpit tables and hydraulic steering upgrades.
