Stabi-Craft on patrol

The New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries has enlisted another Stabi-Craft Marine 609HT boat to patrol hundreds of kilometres of coastline at the top of the South Island.

In the past four years, the Ministry has added 11 Stabi-Craft boats to its fleet, including three HT models, which are now policing waters from New Zealand's Cape Reinga to Bluff.

The Blenheim-based MFish team is tasked with patrolling the Marlborough Sounds, the notorious Cook Strait and south along the Kaikoura coast.

The new Stabi-Craft will generally be used for patrol and compliance duties, enforcing the Fisheries Act and local regulations with both recreational and commercial fishermen.

The vessel, which replaces a Naiad, is powered by twin 100hp Yamaha four-stroke outboard motors and also has radar equipment installed.

In addition to the standard features, the boat has been fitted with a foam fendering system on the side of the pontoons, which enables it to safely come alongside other boats for inspection.

Stabi-Craft boats are built to stringent Coastguard-approved standards to comply with the New Zealand CPC standard that was voluntarily introduced by manufacturers in 1997.
