The uniquely styled Horizon FD80 stunned the world at its launch in 2019. Here, all of a sudden, was a boat with superyacht levels of interior volume, but wrapped in a package lacking the same waterline – and price tag.
The Horizon FD80 is part of the Taiwanese motor yacht maker Horizon’s “fast displacement” series, a family of luxury cruisers sitting on top of tall, beamy, high-volume hulls aimed at maximising efficiency.
The three levels of living space are split between the Open Bridge model featuring an exposed flybridge and an optional fixed windscreen, or the Skyline enclosed flybridge version.
Out of the water, the Horizon FD80 has presence and looks like nothing else out there. Below the waterline it includes a wave-piercing bow that increases the waterline of the motor yacht, aiding with fuel efficiency and stability at speed while making the ride much smoother when heading into waves.
Helping with directional stability is a long skeg, comprising about half the hull’s length, hard chines at the bow to help with lift and displacing spray, and soft chines running amidship to aft to help with reducing resistance.
The big benefit to owners, though, is the four-stateroom layout and large expanse of outdoor space – features usually reserved for much larger yachts.
The boat features a full-beam deck-level master suite in the bow – no more ducking below – full-height windows in most interior spaces offering a commanding view of the water, and a “beach club”, an opening transom that connects the Horizon FD80’s interior directly with the swim deck.
There is enough deck space aft for the Horizon FD80 to carry up to a 4.8-metre tender.
The Horizon FD80 was one of three of the brand’s yachts on show at the 2020 Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival, an event held in lieu of last year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.
The Horizon FD range, featuring the FD75, FD80, FD85, FD87, FD92, FD102 and range-topping FD125, is solid in Australia via Horizon Yacht Australia.
