Ten sleeps to the Variety Splash, but who’s counting?
The families from Ronald McDonald House with sick children who are currently being treated by The Royal Children’s Hospital are sure to be.
On the eve of the start of the Fifth Annual Variety Splash, the organisers are pleased to announce that the event has partnered with the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), to enable a number of families and children to join the Splash as it makes its way around Port Phillip later this month.
RMHC is an independent, non-profit organisation that helps seriously ill children and their families when they need it most. One in eight Australians have been helped or know someone who has used one of the RMHC programs, and by hosting these special families, the Splash fleet is helping relieve the burden families of children experiencing serious illness are often placed under.
"For these kids and their families the opportunity to get out on a boat for a day will provide a touch of normality and a break from lengthy hospital treatments," said Lizzie Read of RMHC.
With a fleet of 20 power and sail boats, this year the 200 participants have set a target of raising $100,000 which collectively brings the fundraising total of the annual event close to $500,000.
Variety Splash will again be looking at how the amazing fundraising efforts can help introduce children to sailing and on-water activities. "In previous years we have been able to help many Victorian yacht clubs with their Sailability and Tackers programs, which have been a great way to get children with special needs and disabilities out on the water," says Event Manager Jav Greaves.
The three-day Variety Splash takes participants around Port Phillip and Corio Bay, on a fun-filled adventure that is open to power and sail boats of all shapes and sizes. The Splash is an annual event where the focus is all about having fun on the water. As with all Variety events, the Splash too has a serious side, with its primary objective to raise much-needed funds to help empower Victorian children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to live, laugh and learn.
