Victorian Speed Sailing was set up in April 2013 with the goal of sending three of our fastest GPS speed sailers to the Luderitz Speed Event in Africa.
The three sailors who make up the VSS team are Jaques Kint, Andrew Daff and Craig Spottiswood all of whom have held both state and national records and rated in the top 10 speed sailors in the world.
The event will be held in October will be at Luderitz in Namibia. Luderitz is a man-made speed channel which has been cut into the desert. It is buffetted by very strong gale-force winds that are, for several months of the year, consistent in strength and direction. These elements create a perfect combination for going fast -- really fast. To date, several World Speed Records have been smashed at Luderitz.
The VSS team has a strong pedigree. The sailors reside in Melbourne, Geelong and Regional Victoria, and as Victoria is blessed with some of the fastest natural speed sailing locations in the world, the team feels that it has a great chance at setting the speed sailing world alight!.
The team's home beaches are steeped in tradition -- Sandy Point has long been regarded as the birthplace of speed sailing, with its long curving bank and exposure to Bass Strait. On the other side of Port Phillip, the mudbanks of Swan Bay near Queenscliff provide an amazing stretch of flat water which can be sailed in most directions.
At the Luderitz Speed Event, the sailors will be sailing at over 50 knots. To put that into perspective, that's faster than most ski boats with huge V8 engines can travel!
