Southern Formula teases new hard top models

Hard-topped versions of the blue water-proven Southern Formula range are on the way

Southern Formula Boats has revealed it will be launching new hardtop models to join its current fibreglass trailerboat line-up. This Melbourne based fishing boat maker is set to debut open and enclosed hardtop versions of its Southern Formula SF19, SF21 and flagship SF24.

Teaser details of the new lidded models was posted on the Southern Formula Facebook page only yesterday, and was greeted with enthusiasm by fans of these tough, no-nonsense, deep-vee offshore fishing boats.

There is little information to hand on the new models, but from the line drawings of two hardtop-equipped Southern Formula boats posted on Facebook, we can see what looks to be a stainless steel framed, open fibreglass hardtop model, as well as a semi-enclosed fibreglass version with a full-shelter helm station and saloon area.

The line drawings indicate that both hardtops are relatively short in length, but they do appear large enough to shield the skipper and forward passengers from the noon sun. We might also point out that a shorter hardtop is often preferred by anglers as longer versions can intrude into the cockpit fishing space.

Of the two new hardtop configurations, we suspect the fully enclosed version to be the preferred choice with sport fishermen; it not only looks great, but will prove to be very effective in sheltering the skipper and crew during long trips out to the wide offshore billfish and tuna grounds.

Nothing beats an enclosed hardtop for keeping you warm and dry in inclement weather.

The enclosed hard top model looks like it will have a two-front pane, deck-to-hardtop toughened glass windscreen with a pair of wipers, along with angular side glass windows. We expect the side windows to slide open for cabin ventilation - although this is not shown on the line drawing.

Both the hardtop and enclosed hardtop models will be great for mounting fishing accessories. In addition to providing weather protection, a well-designed hardtop provides a base for securing everything from cockpit spreader lights through to radar domes, outriggers, radio antennas, and a rocket-launcher rod rack.

With the addition of the two hardtop variants, the Southern Formula boat range effectively triples to nine models, given there will now be three versions of the SF19, SF21 and the range-topping SF24.
