Windcraft, the importer of Hanse, Dehler and Moody yachts, is also the Australian distributor for Italian-made Solaris yachts and the company will be bringing in the first Solaris for the Sydney International Boat Show in August.
Peter Hrones, managing director of Windcraft, told BoatPoint and boatsales that the Solaris slots into his portfolio of yacht brands because of its prestige. The bigger custom models are designed and engineered by Doug Peterson, while Javier Soto Acebal designs the decks, styling and so on.
"We had Hallberg-Rassy for about 10 years and this is the next-level yacht. It's right up there with Swan and it's a family-owned company building custom-built boats, run by the guys who had Grand Soleil some years ago. So there's history in building production boats and they've got lots of new developments.
"We have 350 Hanse owners in Australia and New Zealand and we wanted something for them to move into. Now we have, with owners of 50 and 54s looking at moving up to the new Solaris 58.
"Clean decks, self tackers... they have it all and cost twice and as much as a Hanse. But owners understand that when they look and touch the yachts," Hrones said, adding the first owner of the 42 coming to Sydney owns an Aston Martin and this is his yachting equivalent.
Solaris builds high-quality yachts from 37 feet to 72 feet. The latter model is a fully custom yacht costing about $4.5 million Euros.
Meantime, Solaris says the new 42 is consistent with the philosophy that has always distinguished the brand: building yachts for people who really go at sea and who appreciate structural strength, stiffness and quality.
The 42 is described as an ORC cruiser-racer featuring a strong and carefully hand-made construction intended to satisfy the most demanding owners looking for maximum performance, comfort and safety at sea.
The 42 can be configured in either a two- or three-cabin layout with two heads. And although the Solaris is designed for serious ocean and inshore racing, it is not short on luxury and quality.
The big owners cabin enjoys a nice size island bed with lots of cupboard space which the company is a bonus for a 42 footer.
Sailing-wise, the Solaris is neat and clean with all halyards and sheets running under the decks making it easy to get around and leaving lots of room to work the boat or relax.
