Sleipner launches new-generation eVision thrusters

Smaller, lighter and more efficient electric thrusters launched for boats from 12 to 25 metres

Sleipner, the name behind the Side-Power bow and stern thruster range, has revealed an all-new generation of devices that will bring huge benefits to their users.

The new eVision range of thrusters uses a new brushless DC electric motor designed specifically for the task. Because the motor uses no brushes, there is no build-up of carbon that can cause the armature to spark.

Of note, the new range will draw 30 per cent less current, is quieter, weigh as much as 50 per cent less than the models they will replace, and take up to 40 per cent less space to mount.

New Q-Prop propellers introduced to the Vision range reduce the amount of noise generated by the thrusters as they work.

The new range of thrusters is also aimed to help the market as the industry shifts towards a reliance on even more electrification.

For motor yacht owners considering upgrading to the new thrusters, Sleipner says they are compatible with its S-Link Control system introduced in 2011.

The new eVision thruster uses an integrated proportional power controller to control the speed of the thruster, a big change from traditional single-speed motors that only recognised ‘on’ or ‘off’.

Sleipner said this made the new eVision range much longer-lasting at 100 per cent thrust, making them ideal for heavy use via joystick controllers.

Simpler installations

The new motors also require less wiring, using just a pair of power leads and a single spur cable used to connect the thruster to the boat’s electronic backbone.

Sleipner said its eVision thrusters would be available for both new boat production and aftermarket refits by the end of March.

No Australian pricing has yet been released, although Sleipner said the new eVision thruster range would be priced competitively with other proportional power control models already on the market.

Sleipner's Side-Power range is made up of more than 120 models for vessels ranging from 10 metres to 30 metres.

The range includes DC thrusters, retractable thrusters, electric AC and hydraulic models to suit a range of vessels and configurations.
