"I want to see an Irish entry in the 2009-10 race," he told invited guests at the Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire on June 2.
"I know the people of Dublin and Ireland would get behind a local entry to make the campaign a real success," said Knox-Johnston.
Sir Robin, the first person to sail solo and non-stop around the world in 1969, successfully completed the VELUX 5 OCEANS solo around the world race last month and is now looking forward to overseeing the 2007-08 Clipper Round the World Race that starts in Liverpool on September 16 as chairman of race organisers Clipper Ventures plc.
Each of the 10 identical 68ft yachts that compete is backed by a different international city and the line up for the upcoming race includes Singapore, Glasgow, Durban and Qingdao, the Olympic Sailing City of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, among others.
Sir Robin founded the biennial Clipper Race in 1995 to give ordinary people the chance to do something that had formerly been the preserve of the wealthy.
The race, which lasts ten months over 35,000nm, is divided into seven legs and 15 individual races.
Points are accumulated and the yacht with the highest total wins the prestigious race trophy.
