Simrad NSX, next-gen plotter and fishfinder, revealed

Simrad has unveiled the NSX mid-range chartplotter and fishfinder range for power boats

Marine electronics group Simrad has launched the Simrad NSX, a new-generation mid-range touchscreen multifunction displays that it claims will redefine the boating experience.

The new Simrad NSX chartplotters and fishfinders will come in 7.0-, 9.0- and 12.0-inch sizes. They are optimised to run on power boats, and use a bespoke operating system that introduces more functionality than before.

“NSX features an innovative and modern interface with a new, intuitive touch screen experience with crystal clear views,” Simrad said in a statement announcing the new range.

“Charts include powerful C-MAP navigation capabilities and compatibility with sonar, radar and autopilot systems.

“Simple setup wizards guide users through each step during device setup, and Simrad app integration makes connectivity from your smartphone easier than ever.”

That last reference is to Simrad’s Boating & Navigation iPhone and Android smartphone app, which is now significantly enhanced to work with the new NSX system.

The app update – reserved for premium subscribers who pay up to a $75 annual membership fee – includes satellite overlays on maps, a weather overlay, track sharing, personalised notifications, and an anchor alert feature.

The weather overlay alone, though, could be worth the subscription, with overlays including wind, gusts, rain, air temperature and barometric pressure in real-time on the smartphone’s screen.

Simrad said the new NSX system was designed to “deliver a wide eco-system allowing users to expand the MFD with additional functionality, easier integrations and support for a wide range of third-party applications”.

“Boaters who love fishing can utilise NSX to view high-resolution images below and to the sides with Active Imaging and CHIRP sonar, SideScan/DownScan Imaging and FishReveal – or search even greater depths with a wide range of [1kW] compatible transducers,” it said.

“Users can integrate easily with their radar and get the most out of their autopilot systems by connecting to auto-routing.”

Full integration with the app means users will be able to set and start automatic routing via their handheld device.

One of the big features of the new Simrad NSX system is the ability to drag and drop functions – packaged as smartphone-like apps – to quickly and easily build a customised screen.

It also introduces easily switchable day and night modes via the SolarMAX touchscreen, custom depth shading, and high-level bathymetry down to 30cm.

The system is plug-and-play compatible with Simrad’s HALO dome radars, which were significantly updated earlier this year.

The C-MAP compatibility includes C-MAP Discover X and Reveal X marine charts that Simrad said were featured in a “fresh, intuitive” presentation, as well as one-touch access to map markers for locations, points of interest, tides, channels and more.

The new plotter and fishfinder includes a single slot for an up to 32GB microSD memory card behind the unit, while the larger 9.0-inch and 12-inch screens add a USB slot also on the back of the unit.

The devices include Bluetooth and wireless internet connectivity.
