Shell Cove Boat Harbour on NSW South Coast

It's 30 per cent bigger than Darling Harbour and has a 300 berth marina

Construction of Shell Cove, the new safe harbour and marina at Shellharbour, 21km south of Wollongong on the NSW South Coast, is ahead of schedule.

The Shell Cove development will include a 300-berth marina, supporting boat services, boat ramp, potential dry
stack, and accompanying waterfront shopping centre and a residential
development called The Waterfront.

Shell Cove is said to be the largest coastal residential development
ever initiated by a local government authority in Australia. Once
completed in late 2018, its man-made inner harbour will be around 30 per
cent larger than Sydney’s Darling Harbour.

With more than 85 per cent of excavation now complete, Shellharbour City Council and developers Frasers Property Australia have engaged a contractor to commence constructing the massive breakwater and groyne at the new landmark development.

The breakwater will extend 467 metres into the ocean at a depth of 10 metres at the head of the breakwall and use 400,000 tonnes of local rock.

The groyne, a low timber wall built from the nearby beach into the sea and designed to minimise erosion, will extend 282 metres.

Meanwhile, the boat harbour with marina will use 442 treated hardwood piles and include and 800m-long boardwalk.

The early commencement of the breakwater and groyne construction will ensure that the overall program target date of completion by end 2018 will be achieved, the council says.

"Construction of the breakwater is an exciting milestone in the development of this world class marine facility that has been 30 years in the making," said Mayor Marianne Saliba.

"Council made the ambitious decision to create a new suburb that includes an inland boat harbour and marina to help diversify the region’s economy and attractions," Cr Saliba said.

In a couple of years, boaters will finally have a safe harbour south of
Sydney, making Shell Cove a potentially great stepping off point for many of the top
game fishing grounds, maybe a place to stage fishing tournaments, certainly a safe harbour and destination for cruising sailors and
trailerboaters.

The future marina is currently under construction
and once complete will offer pontoon berthing for approximately 300
vessels, direct access to the Pacific Ocean [sic Tasman Sea], charter boat operations, a
public boat ramp, and a variety of commercial marina facilities and
services, developers say.

But the boat harbour and boating facilities are just part of the new development that includes supermarket, tavern, boutique hotel, primary school, medical centre, nearby golf course,

Upon completion, the $3.7 billion residential and tourism hub will offer a waterfront lifestyle "where residents and the wider local community can shop, dine, socialise and play in a dynamic harbourside environment."

The Waterfront, Shell Cove is located 22 kilometres south of Wollongong in one of the most beautiful coastal regions in Australia. More at www.frasersproperty.com.au/NSW/Shell-Cove.
