Seat Cupra-styled De Antonio D28 revealed

Australia’s newest car brand, Cupria, has taken its hand to also designing a boat that will go on sale late this year

Next year Australia will add Seat, yet another car brand, to its already crowded new-car market. But the Spanish car-maker will also have a new boat that perfectly matches its flagship model.

Seat has announced it will enter the Australian market via its amped-up performance sub-brand, Cupra, with the Leon hot hatch, Ateca compact SUV and Formentor coupe-styled SUV all in line to arrive here mid-way through next year.

But the brand has also just revealed a bespoke version of a Spanish-made De Antonio D28 motor yacht that mimics the 390hp inline five-cylinder-equipped Seat Formentor VZ5 – one of the vehicles in line to go on sale in Australia next year – in terms of performance and styling.

Describing it as a “Cupra for the sea”, Seat’s spin on the De Antionio D28 is that it has built a sea-going version of the Formentor.

“The asphalt has turned into water for this showboat inspired by the Cupra Formentor VZ5 that conveys all the design of this model to a high-performance yacht, developed in collaboration with the Barcelona-based shipbuilder De Antonio Yachts,” it said.

Similar feelings

Cupra colour and trim head of concept and strategy, Francesca Sangalli, said both Seat and de Antonio had a strong affinity with the sea via their Barcelona location.

“This type of boat, its dimensions and design had all the characteristics to fit and combine with Cupra as a brand,” Sangalli said.

“When you look at them together, you perceive the same code, the same feeling.”

The design team used all the same colours and finishes used in the high-riding hot hatch, but modified to take into account the effects of saltwater and sunlight on the materials used – for instance, the real leather in the Cupria Formentor is replaced with synthetic “vegan” leather that resists ultraviolet rays.

Other materials investigated include wood, carbon fibre, and metallic trim used in the road-going car.

Road car colours

The T-topped De Antonio D28’s hull is painted in the same matte Petrol Blue as the SUV, combined with black chrome highlights and Cupria’s signature, copper, to create diagonal lines in contrasting colours.

De Antonio said the D28 Formentor would go on sale late this year. The boat features a walkaround centre console with a bathroom built below the console and twin outboard engines hidden below an aft sun lounge.

Onboard the dayboat is room for up to 10 passengers.

Now that this project is finished, both brands have flagged they’re moving onto the next one to create a hybrid-engined motor yacht that will launch next year.

De Antonio Yachts are sold in Australia via The Boutique Boat Company.
