
SOS Marine will be showcasing two products, the SOS Dan Buoy and the Sea Scoopa both accepted entrants in the DAME (Design Awards METS) Awards -- the most prestigious design competition for new marine equipment and accessories in the world.
SOS Marine is exhibiting in the Australian Pavilion with the Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) at the 2010 Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS).

With Man Overboard (MOB) accounting for 80 per cent of deaths at sea, the Sea Scoopa offers a new approach to this age-old problem.
The Sea Scoopa MOB recovery system, has been designed for the saving of lives at sea while minimising harm to both the rescuer and the victim. The Sea Scoopa utilises a net to capture the MOB while the rescue boat is in motion and has the necessary steerage to scoop the victim into the net. No other rescue system has this capability, which is so important for capturing a MOB in difficult sea conditions.
The rescuers then use a mechanism with a 2:1 mechanical advantage to lift the MOB on board. This design has the added advantage that it keeps the victim in the medically recommended' horizontal posture to prevent the circum-rescue collapse that can occur with vertical lifting. The rescuers are not required to enter the water.
The Sea Scoopa was designed in Australia by an intensive-care medicine specialist, Dr Bob Wright who has over 40 years of ocean experience.
“The fine mesh lifting net conforms to the body shape and does not use rigid components which can increase the possibility of further injury,” said Dr Wright.
The Sea Scoopa is constructed using strong, lightweight, safety-coded materials and is compact and easy to stow when not in use. The Sea Scoopa’s design reduces the risk of rescuer back injury and also reduces the threat of MOB limb entrapment in large apertures that can increase the possibility of drowning.
Importantly, the design also incorporates a stretcher to facilitate the movement of the MOB on board the vessel and subsequent transfer.
