It was a big night for Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), the Canadian-based company behind Sea-Doo, at its official launch of the new Spark personal watercraft last night. A throng of celebrities, VIPs and media turned out to celebrate a whole new way to have fun on the water and rediscover that joie de vivre of pre GFC times.
More than 30 media from Australia and New Zealand, representatives from the Canadian consulate, Surf Life Saving Australia, Water Police and Sea-Doo dealers enjoyed a night given over to celebrating the colourful Spark that has achieved its goal of reigniting the watercraft market. In fact, stock or lack thereof seems to be the only issue echoed by Sea-Doo dealers.
But in respect of towing, champion female surfer Sally Fitzgibbons, a fellow Spark ambassador looking truly gorgeous on the night, had the biggest surprise. The number two female surfer for three years on the ASP World Tour, and twice winner at Bells Beach, praised the Spark for being light and agile before she pulled off the covers on a Spark tucked in the corner of the room.
Voila! Her own custom Spark with a graphics wrap inspired by her favourite St George football team and the indigenous folk who anointed her after her wins at Bells. You can win Sally’s custom Spark at http://www.win.brppromo.com/.
With six Sea-Doos at his Gold Coast waterfront home, Wayne entertains friends from interstate and overseas on his own ride days. Among his fleet are two RXT 260s, two RXP-X 260s, and a RXT-X 260aS with suspension for superior offshore comfort. Its engine has been modified to deliver a top speed of 130km/h-plus. This way, he can range up to Tangalooma for the day or down to the Tweed and nearby Cook Island for some scuba diving.
Asked what he liked about the Spark, Wayne sighted light and easy handling for pulling the ski up a beach and jumping waves, along with the personalisation of coloured hulls and graphics so you can easily identify your own ski from the pack.
"The industry had flat-lined so there were lots of meetings and discussions at our annual design forum," Dubois explains. "BRP CEO, José Boisjoli, tossed up a challenge to the design team -- to create two PWCs on trailer for less than US$10,000.
"We started with a carte blanche and the Spark is all-new from the ACE engine, our most sophisticated yet, to the recyclable Polytec (polyethylene) body," Dubois says. "CAFÉ was the name code given to the project, meaning clean, affordable, fun and efficient. That was the aim.
"The Spark has led to a rediscovery of the sport, it’s all about lightweight, fun and affordability. We wanted to bring back the fun," adds Dubois, as the crowd celebrates, the music goes up a notch and a wave of excitement washes over the successful launch…
