1998 Scimitar 1010 flybridge cruiser review

The award-winning Scimitar 1010 was launched in prototype form at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in 1997 and went on to win the BIA's Australian Cruiser of the Year Award

Since then the Peter Brady-designed twin-hull 33ft flybridge cruiser has found a growing market with charter operators and pleasure craft buyers.

"The concept behind the Scimitar 1010 was to build a vessel with exceptional ocean-going stability, unparalleled fuel efficiency and a shallow draft with protected propellers, shafts and rudders," company director Bryan Bradford says.

In its first year of production, Scimitar has exceeded its target with eight vessels on the water. One of the first off the production line is working in survey as a dive charter vessel out of Brisbane's Moreton Bay and another as a bareboat charter in the Whitsundays.

The computer-aided-design hull features an ultra-low drag laminar flow to minimise drag.

The maker says this allows the Scimitar 1010 to be driven in excess of 20kt with only twin 100hp diesels. Fuel economy is a measured 17lt/hr at around 16kt. A recent passage from Brisbane to Sydney in heavy seas maintained around 16-17kt and an overall fuel consumption of less than 600lt, Bradford says.

For those looking for a fast cruiser, twin 150hp diesels will maintain a comfortable and efficient cruising speed of 20kt.

Scimitar's composite GRP construction utilises a range of high-strength composites and quality hand-laid cloths to provide a light, strong vessel, the company says.

In terms of presentation, the aim was to achieve a timeless appeal with classic lines and a modern expansive layout with easy maintenance and convenience in mind, Bradford told Trade-A-Boat.

The Scimitar has eight berths, comprising two forward queen-sized cabins, two single quarter bunks and two extra single bunks.

In addition, there is a home unit-style galley, saloon, expansive deck areas and a large flybridge that seats up to 10, while still providing room for a liferaft and inflatable.

Other innovative features incorporated in the design include a rainwater retrieval system, a lockable outboard well that doubles as a flushing tank, hoseable and self-draining rod lockers and a lockable flybridge console.

Work is currently underway on a custom-built 40ft version that incorporates the Scimitar 1010 deck, cabin and flybridge.
