Scanyacht 399DS

The Swedish-engineered Scanyacht 399DS is the new deck saloon version of the well-known Scanyacht 391, tested in the May issue of Trade-A-Boat

The 399DS has been designed for couples seeking an easy to manage and comfortable bluewater cruiser. The enclosed deck offers a clear view of the passing scenery from the comfort of the dining room located in the saloon.

"It is ideal for older couples, and we are selling to the same customers as they get older," the yacht's importer Peter Hrones from Windcraft says.

In fact, the customer who purchased the first Scanyacht 391 built some years ago came back and purchased the first 399DS off the production line when launched in Europe last year, Hrones told Trade-A-Boat.

Set up for short-handed sailing, all the lines lead aft to the cockpit. The vessel can be sailed with a masthead or fractional rig with double sweptback spreaders. The self-tacking furling headsail lessens the sail-handling load and there's the option of an autopilot to keep the yacht pointed during dinner.

The deck gear is all Lewmar and the winches are stainless steel Anderson models. The hull, deck and superstructure are manufactured using solid glass down the centreline and an insulating fibreglass-covered foam core elsewhere.

The bulb-footed keel weighs 2400kg, and unlike many modern yachts, is made of lead. It gives the yacht an overall weight of 6400kg.

The Scanyacht's wood-panelled interior features a number of deck hatches throughout to aid vision and provide plenty of light, Hrones says. It is designed to accommodate two couples with forward and aft cabins and two private heads with showers.

The galley is located to starboard just forward of the saloon and features all the amenities for extended sailing, including twin stainless sinks, hot and cold water, oven and an 85lt refrigerator.

At the large navigation station with a forward-facing chart table, an internal bench seat is formed from the forward seating in the observation saloon.

The external helm is located aft of the cockpit and features a comfortable leather pedestal chair.

At the stern is a teak-stripped boarding platform with steps and a stainless ladder.
