As we reported here recently, Scania is making a push into the Australian marine market with six-cylinder and V8 marine diesel engines. Maritimo was one of the first manufacturers to take up the new engines with the company's owner Bill Barry-Cotter choosing a pair of 900hp Scania engines for his own M65. Mr Barry-Cotter said that the engines were a real surprise package and well suited to the luxury motorcruiser market: "The Scania engines have got a really good name in the commercial market so it’s easy to get our customers into them," he said.
Now Scania has launched the next engine in the range, a 1200hp V8 at the Dubai Boat Show and it's rumoured that the engine will make its Australian debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.
The compact 16-litre V8 engine boasts low weight and excellent fuel economy, we're told, allowing for a significantly increased range of operation.
Scania’s pleasure-craft engine is based on the company’s modular system, which has been developed over the past 50 years. It offers reliability and economy, as well as simplifying service and reducing the need for large numbers of unique spare parts.
“This new V8 can provide the powerful heart needed in high-speed pleasure craft, regardless of whether they have a propeller or are driven by waterjet,” says Joel Granath, Senior Vice President for Scania Engines.
“It’s the most powerful engine in Scania’s entire portfolio – the most outstanding that we have developed to date," he added.
Although we haven't been told how the new engine will be displayed at SCIBS, it could be assumed that given the tie-up with Maritimo, the first boat we see the engines in could well be from the Gold Coast manufacturer.
The Dubai International Boat Show was on from March 1-5 and is primarily focused on large yachts and luxury boats. Scania displayed both the new V8 and a 13-litre straight six cylinder, which is capable of producing up to 750hp.
