Savage, Stacer, Quintrex, Yellowfin Plate boats to gain Mercury power

Australia's largest alloy boat maker to switch to Mercury power as its parent company dumps Evinrude outboard engine brand

Telwater, Australia's largest alloy plate boat maker and the owner of iconic brands including Savage, Stacer, Quintrex and Yellowfin Plate, will swap to Mercury outboard engine power after its parent company said it would shutter Evinrude.

Telwater's owner, Canadian outdoor motorised leisure product giant BRP, announced today that it would shut down its Evinrude outboard engine manufacturing operations, and instead had signed up Mercury as the company's official marine engine supplier.

The move means Telwater products can come out of the factory pre-rigged with Mercury outboard engines and supporting electronics.

BRP has pinned the decision to quit the 113-year-old Evinrude outboard engine brand on the COVID-19 pandemic, which has severely hit sales. It means Evinrude will stop the supply of its E-TEC and new-generation E-TEC G2 outboard engines.

The all-new three-cylinder E-TEC G2 outboard engine range was officially launched in Australia late last year.

Mercury Marine said it would start supplying its products to Telwater from June.

As part of a restructure of its global assets, BRP said it wanted to "upgrade the boat production facilities to reorganise manufacturing sites and apply the modularity model used elsewhere".

"This move is designed to enhance productivity and efficiency and to allow us to respond with even more agility to demand," it said.

Telwater said BRP's decision to wind down Evinrude "was a difficult decision considering Evinrude’s rich legacy in the marine business and the strong relationships we’ve built with Evinrude network and customers".

"We thank you [Evinrude's Australian customers] for your support over the years in carrying the Evinrude name."
