Owners will be offered a replacement boat if the problem can’t be fixed, consumer watchdog says
According to the voluntary safety recall notice, issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission late yesterday, the bow section of fibreglass hulls “may show signs of gelcoat crazing below the cabin area of the vessel”.
“This may weaken over time to a point where the fibreglass structure could crack,” the consumer watchdog’s notice says. “If the fibreglass structure cracks, the hull may crack allowing water into the boat. This could cause the boat to sink, causing serious injury or death to people onboard.”
Owners are asked to immediately stop using their boats, and contact their nearest Savage dealer to have the hull assessed. Owners can contact Telwater via email at recall@telwater.com.au or phone 07 5585 9898 during office hours to find the location of the nearest dealer.
“If the defect relating to hull structure is identified the hull will be returned to Telwater for further evaluation,” the recall notice says. “The defect will be rectified or a replacement product offered if rectification is not possible.”
The boats were sold to customers between June 2012 and April 2017. A list of hull identification numbers for the boats affected is on both the ACCC website and Telwater’s website.
Savage Fibreglass, which made the 645C and 655C cabin/targa-top boats as well as bowriders, was established as Telwater’s cost-effective entree to budget and family boating.
