Savage Aluminium 450 Safari SF

The smallest 'walk-through' boat in JJ Savage's range, the 450 Safari SF was launched by the Williamstown (Vic)-based manufacturer in 1998

It was designed as a practical entry-level fishing vessel for the early retiree set and family buyers.

Based on the long-running 455 Ranger hull, the Safari was reconfigured with a deeper vee at the bow and flattened slightly at the stern. It retains the same internal height as the Ranger hull.

Measuring 4.7m overall with a 2.02m beam, the aluminium craft features built-in self-extinguishing foam flotation. It has 2mm thick sides and bottom and is reinforced with a strongback inner keel.

The Safari is one of the new generation of Savage alloy models to feature a fully-integrated fibreglass deck. The fully-integrated helm module provides enough room to locate a range of electronic equipment, including sounder and GPS on the portside.

The helm features a standard range of flush-mounted instruments and its sports-style steering wheel is connected to non-feedback steering as standard.

The open plan of the cockpit is designed to provide enough room for four or more anglers to work the area in comfort. Wide side decks, a trademark on Savage fishing vessels, feature comfortable curved edges.

Generous storage pockets run either side of the carpeted cockpit.

An open stowage area is located forward and along with the opening windscreen facilitates walk-through access to the bow.

Both the driver and passenger are allocated swivelling bucket seats and the driver's seat is adjustable and features an action back. An option is a removable pedestal base, which ensures flexibility and additional cockpit space. Also removable, a functional sliding benchseat is located aft. Alternatively, removable rear quarter seats can be fitted.

At the bow, a bollard, bowsprit, bow roller and bowrails are fitted. Sternrails are also an option.

The Safari has a maximum power rating of 70hp. Fitted with a 50hp Mercury four-stroke, the 450 Safari reached a top speed of around 54kmh at 5400rpm.

As with all of JJ Savage's boats, the options list is extensive.

The 450 Safari package, fitted with a 50hp Mercury four-stroke, rolling on a Mackay trailer with 13-inch wheels is priced at around $16,990. Included in this package is registration, safety equipment, tacho, speed, trim and hour gauges, navigation lights and canopy.
