Sandringham Yacht Club Wins Club of the Year

Victorian yacht club forges ahead

Sandringham Yacht Club has scooped two awards in the annual Clubs Victoria Achievement Awards.

The Awards were announced at a gala evening at Crown Palladium on November 14.

Sandringham took out the Occupational Health and Safety Award as well as the Club of the Year (non Gaming) Award. This is a huge achievement for the Sandringham Yacht Club as it was judged against all the clubs in Victoria, many of which are stronger both in membership and financially than SYC.

Last year, SYC took out the Clubs Victoria award for the Best Redevelopment or Alteration of a Club without Gaming.

The Clubs Victoria Awards recognise the efforts and achievements of clubs over the past 12 months and are only awarded to the most progressive and dynamic clubs in Victoria.

ClubsVIC is the voice of Victoria's network of not-for-profit licensed clubs which provide the community with its social, sporting and cultural infrastructure.
Sandringham, the premier yacht club in Melbourne, has been going from strength to strength following the opening of its new $12m clubhouse last year.

SYC’s clubhouse includes a members’ bar, five-star public restaurant, function rooms, training rooms and the club also offers on-site training for all ages through the SYC Boating Academy.

Furthermore the Harbour View restaurant at SYC was a finalist in the Restaurant of the Year award category. Trading 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, the Harbour View is a sensational restaurant open to the public overlooking Sandringham Harbour and the SYC Marina....certainly well worth a visit.
Sandringham Yacht Club has also recently upgraded its hardstand area for which it received a Clean Marinas award. SYC also won the Victorian Marine Industry Environment Award in 2007 and 2009.

Commenting on the awards, Sandringham Yacht Club’s CEO, Richard Hewett said: “Winning the prestigious Victorian Club of the Year award is colossal recognition for SYC. Our committees, members, stakeholders and staff should be congratulated and feel immensely proud of their club. It is both humbling and satisfying, and impeccable timing that we should be recognised like this on the eve of our Centenary Year in 2011. Let’s celebrate all year long!”

Steve Richards, Commodore of SYC was ecstatic at winning the Club of the Year award: “Obviously I’m pretty chuffed,” said Mr Richards. “But I think the staff of the club should be congratulated for their efforts. Their attention to member details, and the initiatives they have brought to the club – especially in the food and beverage areas are something that we as members can be proud of.”

Mr Richards went on to say that the OH&S award was similarly important to the club: “We are taking the lead in OH&S certainly around the Bay if not elsewhere in Australia,” he said. “Whether it’s on the marina, on the hardstand or on the water, our focus is on safety for everyone,” Mr Richards added.

Sandringham Yacht Club is located in Jetty Road Sandringham. SYC membership is currently open and it offers an excellent range of member and community services – for further information including learn to sail, bookings, membership enquiries or clubhouse tours phone 9599 0999.
