Serious yachties this year have the opportunity to compete in not one but two regattas taking part in Sail Port Stephens before entering the prestigious 2014 Audi IRC Australian Championship immediately following.
All types of yacht skippers, both the casual cruisers as well as the hard-core competitors, will converge on Port Stephens on Friday, April 11 to Wednesday, April 16 for the seventh annual Sail Port Stephens regatta. As well as the great sailing, the regatta also offers a dynamic social and entertainment program and children’s activities on and off the water.
Organisers say that since its beginnings in 2008, the regatta has been one of the fastest-growing in Australia and is set to become an internationally recognised yachting event.
In addition to the feeder races from Sydney to Newcastle and then from Newcastle to Port Stephens, the event is also timed to lead on to the Audi IRC Australian Championship and it is expected that many serious skippers will take part in both.
Now established as a popular event on the yachting calendar, the regatta is run by the Corlette Point Sailing Club and backed by Destination NSW and the Port Stephens Council. It is now one of the biggest events on the Port Stephens calendar and the second biggest sailing regatta in NSW.
Visitors to the regatta can also enjoy a range of activities in Port Stephens including sandboarding and quad biking down the biggest and dunes in Australia, dolphin-watch cruises, swimming with dolphin tours, parasailing, camel and horse-riding, surfing, golf, bushwalking and wine tasting.
