Sabre Yachts is celebrating after 34 years and a lot of water under the boatbuilding bridge. From humble beginnings, the Maine-based company is now running hot with its range of cool Down East-inspired motorboats sporting retro lines, modern drives and conveniences, great comforts and economy.
The very first Sabre ever built and sold was a 28 sailboat appropriately named Patience. Sabre repurchased her from her original owners 10 years ago. She is said to be in perfect condition but, like any 40-year-old boat, she did need some attention to get her back to Bristol condition. She had been sold in 1971 to the local dealership Handy Boat and her retail price with options was US$14,335.
In 1997, Sabre celebrated the building of its 2000th boat, a Sabre 402 sailing yacht. But now, some 43 years after Patience, the Maine-based yard is proud to deliver the 3000th Sabre, a Sabre 48 Salon Express motorboat, to Boston Yacht Sales of North Weymouth, MA.
Times have certainly changed and Sabre Yachts today builds powerboats ranging from 38 to 54 feet, with a 66 footer under development for a 2015 launch. The Sabre 48 has been an especially strong model and continues to be extremely popular in America.
The local Sabre dealer and importer, E Marine has sold a Sabre 38 and a Sabre 42 in recent years. The high-end Down East-inspired motorcruisers are pod-driven using Zeus or IPS. The new 66 in build is a three-cabin/three bathroom flagships, with full-beam stateroom, and three have been presold.
