Sabre 66 to launch

The largest and most luxurious Sabre motoryacht to date is just four weeks away from sea trials and not far off official launching.

The stunning Down East-inspired yacht has been bestowed the model name Dirigo in honour of the Great Seal of Maine.

The Sabre 66 Dirigo is the first American-built, Downeast-style motoryacht of this size to be introduced to the market.

She is, according to her designer Kevin Burns: "the highest expression of Sabre yet."

From her functional foredeck to her spacious and comfortable cockpit, the 66 is every bit a Sabre, the yard says. That means the best deck hardware, on-deck walking surfaces that are safe and secure, hand holds wherever they are needed, and a luxury ambience.

Such things reflect Sabre’s 45-year history of building boats in Maine for people who know boats and know how they should be equipped. This 66  is also an immense yacht for reasons of her volume.

Her systems are described as modern and functional, while performance is forecast to be as invigorating as boaters have come to expect from Sabre Yachts.

Performance estimates (done by Sabre's engineers and confirmed by Volvo Penta) suggest a wide-open throttle speed of 30 knots and a cruise of 25 knots, says Bentley Collins from Marketing and Sales at Sabre Yachts.

The big three-cabin and three-bathroom 'Down Easter' is powered by twin 900hp 13L Volvo IPS III 1200s with pod drives drawing from 3785lt fuel supply.

The Sabre 66’s designer Kevin Burns reports that Drew Pelton at Volvo in the US completed the performance review and update including a simulation of the boat at 20 knots. 

The resulting fuel consumption estimate at 20-knot cruise was calculated to be about 150-160ltr/hr based on a displacement of close to 35.5t

Using these figures, and making his own allowances to reflect realistic boating use, Burns forecasts a 300-380nm range, allowing 10 per cent of the fuel supply in reserve and the extended-range tank option.
