SA boating left high and dry during COVID-19 lockdown

SA’s statewide “circuit breaker” lockdown hits recreational boating

South Australia kicks off its six-day COVID-19 “circuit breaker” lockdown today with recreational boating firmly off the agenda until Wednesday, November 25.

The state yesterday implemented a tough, new “stay at home” period in response to a second coronavirus outbreak that so far has affected more than 20 people.

Under the rules of the lockdown, community activities including business, professional, educational, academic and government activities must stop operation if they involve leaving the home.

It means SA residents will not be able to take their boats in to be serviced, and any boats already at service centres will have to wait out the six-day period before the work on them can resume.

South Australian residents who have travelled to other parts of the state with boats have today as a grace period to travel back to their home where they must remain for the entire lockdown period.

Meanwhile, epidemiologists have urged the SA Government to extend the lockdown to 14 days to ensure it breaks the transmission cycle of the virus.

The call comes after a National Cabinet review of the second-wave outbreak that crippled Victoria found that inadequate contact tracing contributed to the rapid spread of the virus through the state.

It recommended that states “go hard and go early” to stop the spread.

Health authorities are struggling with the virus, with people showing little or no signs of infection during the highly contagious phase of the disease.
