Royal regatta extravaganza

The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria has announced a new pre-Christmas three-day Port Phillip keelboat regatta in November, promised to be the biggest of its kind ever seen on Hobsons Bay, Williamstown in Melbourne

The new Lipton Racing Regatta, to be held from November 17-19, will be a high-standard five-race series, especially for Victorian boats tackling this year’s Sydney-Hobart, Westcoaster and the Australian keelboat class titles.

The five leading bay clubs to be involved include Sandringham, Royal Brighton, Royal Melbourne and Hobsons Bay together with RYCV. Approximately 200 craft and 5000 competitors are expected to attend.

The major prize will be the Lipton Cup, previously owned by and named after the tea merchant Sir Thomas Lipton. Bands, barbecues, and medal presentations will be held on the Williamstown waterfront.
