A 39 year old Aussie is attempting to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean in the The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge and, in so doing, raise $500,000 for charity.
Andrew Abrahams will take his 24ft ocean rowing boat to the start line at La Gomera in the Canary Islands in December and face a gruelling 3000nm row to English Harbour in Antigua.
The race usually takes a team of rowers anywhere from 60-100 days but Andrew aims to complete the race in a world record 46 days.
Around 17 teams from across the globe are in training for the race but Andrew is only the second Australian to attempt this race solo since its inception 1997.
Boats are 7.2 metres long and two metres wide with only a small cabin for protection from the elements. No sails or motors are permitted and no repairs, help or provisions are provided for rowers during the race -- they all must be self sufficient.
The registration fee, which Andrew has paid in full, covers the fee if the worst should happen and a rescue operation is required. The rowers are not reliant on tax payers to come and rescue. All backup and support is covered.
Andrew is hoping to raise a half-million dollars for disadvantaged children in the community.
