Now the future is steel, says Chinese-owned Riva, as it moves to make 100-metre custom superyachts

During the recent 2014 Monaco Boat Show, Riva presented its innovative new full-custom superyacht line. Starting with the first 50-metre project, the custom line will develop further with a second 68-metre yacht, but will ultimately reach lengths of 100 metres over the next few years.

“Building in fibreglass is undoubtedly easier than building in wood. Building well, though, is difficult,” said Carlo Riva in the late 1960s. Interpreting this statement today, Riva is now replacing the fibreglass with steel to create its new custom superyacht line.

RIVA SUPERYACHTS

Announcing the new superyacht line at its stylish Aquarama Lounge on the terrace of the Yacht Club de Monaco, Riva is no stranger to big boats.

Its Yacht Division has worked with Northern European shipyards to build the famous “Caravelle” and “Atlantic” M/Y series.

Riva also established a partnership with CRN, producing six motor yachts exceeding 20 metres in length in the “Marco Polo” series and two 90-foot and 100-foot “Vespucci” craft built between1970 and 1978.

Alberto Galassi, CEO from Riva parent the Ferretti Group, sounded upbeat about the new custom-line venture.

“Just over three months ago, again in Monte Carlo, we celebrated the debut of the 122’ Mythos (opening photo), the flagship of the brand and Riva's first yacht to be entirely built using a light alloy,” Galassi said.

“Today is another extraordinary day, because Carlo Riva's idea to build large yachts is finally turning into reality. Riva is ready to step into this market segment as a leader.

“Thanks to the support of our shareholders [Riva is owned by the Shandong Heavy Industry Group in China], who are truly in love with this brand, and thanks to the efforts of the numerous teams involved in this project, we will be able to offer owners magnificent works of art cruising the seas, characterised by Riva's unmistakable style," Galassi said.

LONG-RANGE DISPLACEMENT YACHTS

Riva's new line will include displacement yachts fully customisable by the owner in terms of fittings and interior décor (using Officina Italiana Design) and will be characterised by a very innovative look and style, somehow different from Riva's traditional classical lines.

Featuring slender, streamlined and dynamic profiles and a very sober, clean design, these yachts will, in Riva’s words, be truly unique works of art fully embodying Riva's DNA.

The first 50-metre yacht by Riva will be built in the Group's shipyards in Ancona, which specialise in the construction of steel, aluminium and composite material yachts between 45 and 90 metres in length

50-METRE M/Y RIVA

The new mega yacht, featuring an overall length of almost 50 metres and a nine-metre beam, will be a displacement yacht with four decks, capable of hosting up to 12 people plus nine crew

Various areas will be devoted to relaxation and entertainment, with a large outdoor dinette at the bow (located just before a garage fitting the second tender and the technical area with two jet skis).

The sun deck will feature freestanding seats plus a Jacuzzi with sun pads, while the aft area on the lower deck will be a real beach club with a cocktail bar and an indoor living room that can be further extended outside, both towards the stern - thanks to the collapsible door turning into a swimming platform.

An innovative float-in garage will be able to store a tender up to almost six metres in length.

TRANSOCEANIC RANGE

The new 50-metre Riva may be equipped with two possible engine sets: either two CAT C32 2100rpm engines or two MAN D2862 LE 466 2100rpm engines, both capable of pushing the yacht to a maximum speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

The transatlantic range at a cost-saving cruising speed of 11 knots is said to be 3800 nautical miles. Two zero speed stabilizing fins will be installed standard, to ensure maximum comfort and stability even when the yacht is at anchor. More at www.ferrettigroup.com.
