Thirty one tagged carp have been released into the upper Murrumbidgee River near Bredbo, NSW as part of a research project.
The tagged carp are marked with a long yellow tag near their dorsal fin (see photo). These carp are also implanted with electronic tags so their movements can be tracked to tell researchers how carp move up and down the river system.
Recreational fishers are asked to please release tagged fish if caught and report details to Bush Heritage Australia (mob: 0407 700 431). A reward will be given for making a report. Angers are also asked to please take photos if possible.
Carp movement is being studied as part of the Upper Murrumbidgee Demonstration Reach (UMDR) Carp Research project in partnership with Bush Heritage Australia, Capital Region Fishing Alliance and NSW DPI Fisheries.
For more information on the UMDR Carp Research project go to www.upperbidgeereach.org.au.
This project will assist with management and long-term control of carp populations in NSW. Generally, NSW recreational fishers are encouraged to retain and utilise landed carp rather than return them live to the water. Fish retained should be dispatched humanely.
