When launching, the boat and trailer are reversed into the water to a depth where the boat is unable to float off the trailer. Start the boat motor and ease forward. The spring loaded catch will automatically release. Then reverse or glide off the trailer.
To retrieve, set the latch to Retrieve, reverse trailer into the water to a similar depth that was used for a 'good launch' at this ramp. Drive the boat onto trailer to within one metre of the latch.
When the boat has settled (two seconds), gently drive it up the last metre to the latch. The latch will now slide over the snare and the boat will be securely held.
Veteran boatie and TrailerBoat journalist Rick Huckstepp is excited about the innovation.
"It's three years since I installed the Release and Retrieve Boat Latch to my 5.5m AMM plate boat and another to a 7.4m AMM Tournament boat. Boating at the ramp cannot get any easier, simpler or expedient utilising this boat latch," said Huckstepp.
"While everyone else is doing battle with winch handles, ropes and chains, I am either boating over the horizon or on the way home. It just doesn't get any better than that!" he said.
