Redevelopment for Cockatoo Island

Cockatoo Island, the largest island in Sydney Harbour, is aiming to revive its involvement with the maritime industry.

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust is seeking expressions of interest on leasing buildings and facilities on the island, and input from the industry on how the island can be developed to meet the current and future needs of the Australian maritime sector through facilities for marina operations, boat building and repair, and ship chandlery.

Cockatoo Island covers 17.9 hectares and is just a short ferry ride from Circular Quay. From the 1840s until 1908, it was variously a convict prison, reformatory, industrial school and jail.

At the same time, it was a maritime precinct and eventually became a major shipbuilding yard. Shipbuilding activities peaked in 1919 when more than 4000 people were employed on the island constructing warships for the Royal Australian Navy.

The dockyard was decommissioned in 1991 and a variety of structures such as dry docks, industrial buildings, wharves and slipways, multi-storey workshops, houses, and historic buildings remain in place.
