Recfishwest has written to all major parties emphasising the importance of maintaining projects that support the activity that not only has a significant social and economic benefits, but also contributes more than $600 million each year to the Western Australian economy.
Recfishwest’s Election Position Statement 2013 has been prepared to advise political parties and candidates on the priorities that Recfishwest has identified as fundamental to progressing and promoting the aspirations and values of that large proportion of the Western Australian community that go fishing recreationally.
Recfishwest says it has encouraged a clear and definitive commitment from political parties against these priorities that will provide guidance to WA’s recreational fishers who will be voting in the coming election.
Some of the topics covered in the ten-page document include:
- Review of management plans for the Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network
- Communication signals for the Australian coastline
- Quantifying the economic, social and environmental benefits of recreational fishing
It will be interesting to see the comments from the parties and what they intend to do for the estimated 740,000 recreational fishers who access the fish resources of Western Australia.
