The Friends of Corio Bay Action Group has organised a rally to ban haul seine and mesh netting in Corio Bay and Port Phillip. The rally will be held this Sunday (November 16) and anyone interested in the sustainability of Corio Bay and Port Phillip is encouraged to attend.
Below is a video documentary made by the Group to highlight the damage done to the ecology by netting. The Group says that residents and anglers have noticed a significant change to the ecology of the Bay and a decline in fish numbers over recent years due to netting.
Organisers say that they are aware of the current Liberal announcement to ban netting. "We welcome this initiative. Rumour has it the Labor party is about to announce their policy. This just may be the public platform to do this," they say.
Guest speakers will include Rex Hunt, Lee Rayner, David Kramer and, of course, politicians given that this is the lead-up to the Victorian State election.
Attendees of the rally are asked to meet at Hay Market car park, opposite Trades Hall, 127 Myers St Geelong at 11.00am on Sunday. From there, the rally will be marching down Moorabool Street to Cunningham Pier waterfront.
