Celebrating its 70th year building Australian fishing and pleasure boats, Quintrex, in 2015, will now be making a big push into the alloy boat-trailer market.
At a function on the Gold Coast last week, the boating media was shown around part of the company’s expansive manufacturing facility where currently 30-35 trailers per day are rolling down the assembly line.
While Quintrex is still building a limited number of galvanised trailers, the big push is now into alloy.
Quintrex Alloy Trailers, as they’re known, are constructed from rolled aluminium I-beam creating a stronger frame with no weak points and less flex. According to Trailer Manager Sam Phelan the trailers have been extensively tested undergoing a simulated 100,000km ‘torture test’ around specialised army track.
To ensure they stand the test of time and the harsh conditions of Australian roads, Phelan said that the testing included a track of purpose-built barriers designed to push trailers and vehicles to their limit.
After testing both steel and alloy models, the steel trailer, as expected showed more signs of wear and fatigue while the alloy model surprised even the trailer team by only losing it licence plate.
The manufacturer claims that the alloy trailers have a lifespan up to three times longer than a steel trailer.
"With a number of features varied across the range including flipper guides and swing-away jockey wheels, Quintrex trailers are easy to use and operate and you can even option up trailers with extras including walkways, a spare wheel and even a swing-away draw bar to fit into tight garages," Phelan said.
Phelan added that the company had been working hard at developing a range that would allow the benefits of alloy trailers to work for smaller boat packages as well: "We have some very exciting new releases we believe are going to fill a gap in the market especially in the smaller alloy trailer range," he said.
During our tour of the manufacturing facility, Phelan said that although there were still parts on the alloy trailers that were galvanised, parts would be readily available from dealers to refresh the trailers if some parts aged: "Certainly, even though we use all top quality parts, some components will age more quickly than the main frame of the trailer and all these will be available from dealers so owners can bring the trailers back up to near-new specification," he said.
Phelan said that although the trailers were specially designed for Quintrex’s boat, motor, trailer packages they could be bought from Quintrex dealers as a 'loose' trailer for another brand of boat.
All trailers come with a three-year warranty.
