Racing in the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series in Lake Havasu near the Colorado River in Arizona, hydro Problem Child recently set a new drag boat mile-per-hour record for the Top Fuel Hydro Class of 262.238 MPH.
Racing in October this year, the incredible top speed in Eddie Knox’s nitro-methane burning hydro was reached by driver Daryl Ehrlich in 3.500 seconds! Count them. This surpasses the previous record set by the dynamic duo in 2011 of 258.264 MPH.
BOATS AND ROCKET FUEL
Two types of hulls are currently being utilised in the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series: watercraft and outrigger-style raceboats.
The conventional and outrigger-type boat hulls are designed with a tunnel between the front sponsons for trapping air and lifting the bottom of the hull to ride pretty much entirely above the surface of the water.
A W-drive propels these crafts down the track with twin counter-rotating props that spin at 20,000rpm. Engines are limited to 500 cubic inches, but they run off ‘rocket fuel’ to create some 10,000HP.
Top Fuel Hydro may utilise only nitro-methane (65 per cent minimum) and alcohol (pure methanol). Needless to say, the Fuel Hydros thunder down the liquid track at breakneck speeds and are incredible to watch.
The boats hit in excess of 250mph in less than four seconds with all the action taking place in 1000 feet. Now, thanks to Problem Child, even greater speed feats are happening.
There are other classes racing in the US Drag Boat Series, from hydros to flat-bottoms, Eliminators right down to teenagers riding personal water craft.
Here are two videos of the action starring the famous Problem Child: the record run and a wicked crash.
