Category five Cyclone Yasi has swept across the coast of northern Queensland, with reports suggesting the most seriously affected areas are south of Cairns at Mission Beach, Tully and Cardwell. The cyclone system’s fury was centred on these towns and reports so far suggest that there has been major property damage, including to some marinas, but fortunately no loss of life.
"We do expect to see Tully experiencing some very, very high levels of damage to buildings, to vegetation and potentially to other infrastructure," said Queensland Premier Anna Bligh at a news conference early today.
Cardwell was most seriously hit with reports of up to 70 boats damaged or destroyed in the marina.
Club Marine has established an Event Response Team to maximise its ability to assist policy holders affected by Cyclone Yasi as quickly as possible.
Led by National Claims Manager Phil Johnson and Queensland State Manager Brett Edmonds, the team is on the ground in the immediate aftermath of the storm, assessing damaged boats, leading the salvage operation and evaluating the claims of Club Marine Members.
Club Marine has contracted teams of experienced assessors from Queensland and New South Wales, who have already commenced operations. Additionally, Club Marine has consulted with local crane operators, salvage teams and diving companies, who are standing by.
Club Marine has also bolstered its resources to process and evaluate claims as quickly as possible in its National Claims Hub in Melbourne. In the aftermath of the storm, claims officers will be taking calls, prioritising claims and relaying the information to the Event Response Team in Queensland.
Affected Club Marine Members are urged to phone Club Marine to file your claim: 1300 00 2582 (CLUB).
Given the magnitude of the storm event, Club Marine urges all Club Marine Members to heed the instructions of the local, state and Government emergency agencies. Please do not return to storm-affected areas until cleared to do so.
