Queensland rolls out smartphone-based digital marine licences

Trials are over, so Queensland’s new digital boat licences have rolled out across the state

Queensland’s digital boat licence is now available to all of the state’s residents after a successful pilot and extended trial on the Fraser Coast and in Townsville launched late last year had more than 500,000 people jump onboard and try it.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) launched the Queensland Digital Licence app in November last year, allowing those taking part to download and use the app for car licences, proof of age for anyone aged 18 or over, and marine licences.

The app was developed by cybersecurity and digital identity experts Thales in conjunction with Australian app development group Code Heros and Queensland-based technology group Aliva.

Anyone downloading the Queensland Digital Licence app can now use their smartphone to show their virtual boat licence rather than a physical version.

The app is also fully aligned with international standards for mobile driver’s licences, which means a Queensland marine licence can also be shown in international locations if needed.

At the core of the app is the user’s privacy.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said nothing was more important than the app user’s private data, which should be highly protected.

“We are proud of the current success of the Queensland Digital Licence app, ensuring the safety and security of private information while offering a modern digital experience,” Bailey said.

“The app undergoes rigorous privacy and information security testing to protect identity.

“It aligns with international standards for mobile driver licences, setting the standard for mobile driver licence apps across Australia and the world,” he said.

Anyone who wants to use the app has to create a Queensland Digital Identity, which is different to the QGov account that many Queenslanders already use to access government-based online services.

The new digital marine licence can be displayed on a maximum of three devices.
The Queensland Digital Licence app is available via the Apple iOS or Google Play app stores.
