Finnish boat-builder Q-Yachts has released the Q30, a battery-powered, iPad-controlled single-cabin motor yacht that it claims is the smoothest and most silent in the world.
Powering the Q30 is a 20kW “Oceanvolt” electric motor, fed via either a 30kWh or 60kWh battery pack – in contrast, the Nissan Leaf electric car uses an 82kW electric motor fed via a 40kWh battery pack.
The Q-Yachts Q30 was officially unveiled at this week's 2020 Boot Dusseldorf. This is the first time that the Oceanvolt system – developed over the last decade as a propulsion system for sailboats – has officially made the jump out of a wind-powered boat.

Cruising speed for the Q-Yachts Q30 is rated at a comfortable 9.0 knots, with a top speed of just 15 knots.
Maximum range for the Q30 is set at 80nm for the larger battery pack, giving an on-road range equivalent of just shy of 150km – the Nissan Leaf will travel up to 270km on a single tank of electrons.
The Q-Yachts Q30 is built using a fibreglass foam core sandwich, making it as light a possible without having to dip into the expensive world of carbon-fibre enhancements.

That means despite its 9.3-metre stretch, the boat only weighs 1500kg. The hull’s design is also optimised to minimise wake.
The boat misses nothing for luxuries. Teak is used all around the minimalist cockpit, there’s a retractable stainless steel swim ladder hanging off the stern, and pop-up stainless steel cleats help with the smooth looks.

The cockpit contains a table and seating for four people. The helm, meanwhile, will seat two, and includes a leaning post for your portable electronics – there’s no instrumentation, so some form of carry-on smart device is mandatory – with a handy USB charging port to fuel those power-hungry apps.
The boat still needs a 12-volt house battery to run all the boat’s electronics, including LED lighting, a 36-litre fridge, and running water to the on-board shower beside the swimming ladder, and a sink in the cabin.
Oh, and it will also pump your jams, via a B&O Beoplay A1 wireless bluetooth speaker system.
Pricing? In its native Finland the boat is delivered inside a 40-foot shipping container for €183,000 ($A295,000). With that, you also get a 240-volt charger.
