It’s been billed as the world’s largest sportsfishing boat. When completed, Project 406, as the work in progress is known, will stand six levels tall and stretch 52 metres long.
Royal Huisman, a Dutch shipwright specialising in custom-built projects, has revealed it has received a commission to build what it claims is the largest, most luxurious and individual sports fishing yacht that the world has ever seen.
The boat's hull shows classic sportsfisher lines, but stretched and teased to fill its long, sleek profile.
It even has outriggers, a sea-level cockpit with room for a game chair, and observation platforms that overlook the cockpit from staggered upper-deck tiers.
Right up the top is an observation deck, much like a traditional 50-foot game fisher.
The contract for Project 406’s alloy hull and superstructure were signed last year, based on a design penned by Netherlands-based Vripack Yacht Design.
“The yacht’s purposeful lines sweep dramatically aft from her distinctive long and sleek bow, through six towering decks to the stylish downward arc of her stern profile,” Royal Huisman said in a statement announcing the project.
“Here is a unique vessel that effortlessly blends the ultimate sports fishing experience with genuine superyacht scale, comfort and refinement.
“Where else in superyachting might you find a sky lounge that offers the extraordinary ‘theatre’ of spectacular fish catches by day and the relaxed ambience and stunning outlook of a boutique hotel penthouse by night?”
According to Royal Huisman, Project 406 will be optimised for open water in tropical zones where it could target the “larger predatory fish of the open seas, such as swordfish and marlin”.
“Project 406 will be brilliantly equipped to explore this fascinating seascape more than any sportfish yacht before her,” the shipwright said.
Vripack co-creative director Bart Bouwhuis said Project 406 was an “exceptional boat”.
“Project 406 is a sportfisher on steroids,” he said. “It has the true proportions and long flaring bow of a typical American sportfish boat paired with the harmonious feel of a luxurious superyacht.
“It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realised on a grand scale.”
No other details about the build were revealed, with Royal Huisman saying it would provide updates as Project 406 evolved.
