Princess R35 foiling yacht revealed in stunning images

The fastest boat to wear the Princess Yachts badge has its moment in the sun

The Princess R35, the fastest motor yacht to ever wear the marque’s crown emblem, has shown its production form for the first time.

A set of images released overnight reveal the 50 knot-plus, twin-engined hydrofoiling day boat as buyers will see it, complete with clean lines, rear-quarter aerodynamic blades and opulence.

“A combination of stunning design, quality and race-bred technology, the R35 is a revolutionary performance experience at all speeds,” Princess said in a statement accompanying the images.

“In a first for the yacht industry, we partnered with BAR for their America's Cup winning technology and legendary designers, Pininfarina on what is their first ever boat.

“The result has torn up the rule book, rocked the boat industry and set the benchmark for the next generation of Princess yachts.”

Minimising drag

Rather than rise up out of the water like a traditional hydrofoiling craft, the Princess R35 will use its twin foils to finely tune the boat’s heel angle and attitude, “ensuring the most effective contact area at the front of the bow at any speed for stable travel and extreme levels of grip”.

Early video of the heavily camouflaged R35 prototype shows it cutting through swell without the foils deployed, with the bow rising and falling like a traditional hull design. The Princess R35’s active foil system is expected to reduce this motion significantly, as well as reducing drag by up to 30 percent.

The foils will have two settings, sport and comfort, with an onboard computer calculating their position in the water at up to 100 times a second.

The starboard helm station of the Princess R35 can accommodate up to three people, with the helm seat including a lift-up squab to convert it to a leaning post. Protecting the station from the elements is a large, deep, single-piece wrap-around tinted windscreen.

In front of the skipper are two 17-inch digital displays incorporating a chartplotter, full engine instrumentation with fuel gauges, and engine controls. The skipper also has the ride control interface for the electro-hydraulic foils.

Overnight accommodation

Downstairs, accessed via a sliding canopy, there’s a galley with a fridge and bathroom with a shower and head. The dinette built into the bow will convert into a double berth space once the teak table drops. Another freshwater shower with hot and cold running water is located at the transom near the swim deck.

Topsides, the Princess R35 is all sleek, clean lines emphasised by the Esthec flooring. A U-shaped lounge wraps around the back of the helm station, with a step-though centre leading to a rear sun lounge and swim deck.

Princess says the R35 will “set the benchmark for the next generation of Princess yachts”, hinting that the foiling system may eventually roll out across larger models.
