As we reported on previously following the press launch in Melbourne, the impressive German-made Torqeedo electric motors are making a splash in Australia with new importers Power Equipment, which distributes Yanmar and Mase diesel engines among others.
Providing an alternative in the evolving fossil-fuel marine-engine market, the new Torqeedo electric motors include the powerful Cruise range, which is promoted as producing outboard-engine-like output of 5hp, 8hp and 20hp outboards.
Power Equipment has invested half a million in its new Torqeedo agency in Australia and says the Cruise range is perfect for tinnies, dinghies, RIBs, tenders, sail and motor boats and displacement craft up to 10 tons.
THE FULL CRUISE RANGE
The full Cruise range covers 11 electric motor options including:
>> Cruise 2.0T with Tiller (two shaft lengths) 5hp equivalent – ideal for vessels up to three tons;
>> Cruise 2.0R with Remote Throttle (two shaft lengths) 5hp equivalent – ideal for vessels up to three tons;
>> Cruise 4.0T and 4.0R (two shaft lengths) 8hp equivalent – ideal for vessels up to four tons; and
>> Cruise 10.0R (three shaft lengths) 20hp equivalent – ideal for vessels up to 10 tons.
Jason Hodder, Torqeedo Product Manager said: "Power Equipment’s range of Torqeedo Cruise electric motors provides owners of dinghies, motor- and sail-boats with a super-quiet and cleaner alternative to traditional outboards.
"The Cruise impresses with unrivalled efficiency and outstanding range, and we know that the added safety and convenience of a petrol-free motor is a winner."
HIGH THRUST
The Torqeedo Cruise range is said to boast market-leading technology, including state-of-the-art propeller design for serious speed and thrust; robustness and corrosion protection from a strong aluminium housing; and full build and components for saltwater use.
The motors weigh between 15.3 and 49.4kg depending on the model. All Torqeedo motors are said to be clean, super quiet and solar chargeable even during the voyage.
LITIHIUM BATTERY AND APP
A safe Power26-104 high-end lithium battery comes with the Cruise outboards, along with accessories such as the Torq Trac app which intelligently connects with the on-board computer to provide interactive range information straight to your smartphone.
The Cruise motors range in retail price from $5610 to $12,100. During testing in Melbourne, we had a Cruise 2.0T on a Quintrex punt which planed the boat one-up and provided a fair bit of zooming fun. At the very least, the Cruise models from Torqeedo would be useful for tender duties on a cruiser or yacht.
