Police catch runaway tinnie in dramatic recovery

Man injured after a passing boat’s wake tips him out of his tinnie

A 73-year-old Gladstone fisherman has escaped serious injury after a passing boat’s wake tipped him out of his tinnie on Sunday.

Dramatic video footage of the incident on the Calliope River, released by Queensland Police this week, shows the rescue attempt to rein in the wayward tinnie, with an officer finally able to jump aboard and bring it back under control.

“Three men, aged 28, 29 and 30, out kayaking saw the distressed fisherman struggling in the water and paddled over to him,” the report of the incident said.

“They managed to hold onto the injured fisherman while calling out to a passing boat who came over and helped retrieve the man from the water, before ferrying him to shore.”

Police had commandeered a boat form a nearby boat ramp, with its skipper able to nudge the wayward tinnie so that it was travelling in a straight line.

The police officer was then able to jump across to the tinnie and take control and steer the boat back to shore.

Queensland Police said the fisherman was taken to hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.
