Kiwi Peter Burling has won the Moth World Championship in a regatta that saw one of the greatest collections of sailing champions, Olympic medallists and America’s Cup sailors ever put together.
The regatta, held at Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club on Port Phillip was sailed in conditions that varied remarkably with races sailed in winds from five knots to over 25 knots.
Second place went Nathan Outerridge (AUS) who was the 2014 Moth World Champion and who pushed Burling all the way to the last race.
Outteridge was disappointed when the race committee called off racing after the second race of the day due to the conditions. The last race was sailed in blustery conditions with only about half the fleet deciding to race.
There were crashes aplenty during the race but Burling put the icing on the cake by winning the final race of the regatta. After the race, Burling said he was glad the race committee decided to send the boats out one final time: "I'm stoked to win this, it's just awesome," he said. "I’m glad to have won it out here and not on the beach," Burling added.
Third place went to Aussie Josh McKnight who also came third last year. McKnight sailed very consistently throughout the regatta with his worst result being a sixth.
