The Gippsland Lakes will come alive this weekend with a huge number of classic boats gathering for the inaugural Paynesville Classic Boat Rally.
Although all entries have now closed, the weekend will be a fantastic opportunity for lovers of all things nautical to get down to Paynesville for the rally.
According to the official website, which you can view here, the Rally will showcase the best of our locally owned and built boats, along with the rich diversity of boats that are attracted to Victoria’s boating capital, at the heart of the Gippsland Lakes. The Rally will include an on-water sail-past of all the boats entered starting at 11.00am. The classic boats will then be moored on display along McMillan Strait and the foreshore. You'll see novelty boats, colourful flags, colourful boat owners, social activities and community events - all based around about boats and boating.
Along with the sail past, there will be an Expo in the yacht club carpark on both days. A classic yacht parade will also be held on Sunday morning, as well as model boats and other great displays.
The organisers want to extend a big thank you to all those who have entered or have become "Friends of the Rally". Over 130 entries and 26 Friends of the Rally have been received.
"We have a wonderful collection of classic wooden motor cruisers, ketches, yawls, sloops, couta boats, H28s, fishing boats, trawlers, dinghies and speed boats to name just a few. Interest in our great event has been fantastic and we thank all our supporters," said organiser Peter Medling.
"Our vision for this spectacular Rally is to have as many boats as we can muster all gathered here in Paynesville. Classic Boats of all types and histories. Lots of coloured flags and colourful owners and then to do a sail past thru the Straits. Followed by lots of socialising live music and fun Competitions. Can you imagine how spectacular and how much fun this would be?" Mr Medling added.
